A British pensioner named Karl Andree was sentenced to 12 months in jail and 350 lashes by a Sharia court in Saudi Arabia after police found home-made wine in his car.
The 74-year-old British pensioner, who was arrested in August last year, has finished serving his 12-month sentence in jail but is still reportedly being held in jail by the Saudi authorities.
According to Sky News, Andree is currently being held in the notorious Saudi prison named Red Sea Briman Prison which is known for its over-crowded cells and the torture of inmates.
As Saudi officials consider how to carry out Andree’s public flogging, Andree’s three children Hugh, 46, Kirsten, 45, and Simon, 33, are doing all their best to save their father from the second part of his punishment which they fear might kill him because not only is he old and frail but also battling cancer and asthma.
“There is no doubt in our mind that 350 lashes will kill him,” Andree’s son Simon said to The Sun.
In their attempt to save their father from a public flogging, which they fear will kill him, Andree’s children have even gone as far as urging British Prime Minister David Cameron to intervene and persuade the Saudi authorities to stop the public flogging and bring their father home.
Andree, who is an oil executive, has lived and worked in Saudi Arabia for over 25 years.
Alcohol is strictly banned under Islamic law in Saudi Arabia making it illegal to produce it, import it, drink it, or even possess it.
